Mardi Gras: Laissez les Bons Temps

My daughter went to college in New Orleans and my son-in-law is from that great city. They live in Washington, D.C. now, but that doesn't stop them from celebrating Mardi Gras in grand fashion.

Laissez les bon temp roulez means "Let the good times roll." And roll they did this past weekend!

We dined on red beans and rice, jambalaya and corn crab bisque. We drank Hurricanes. We danced to the rhythms of New Orleans jazz and then we drank more Hurricanes. In between, we tried to see who could best pronounce Tchoupitoulas street. Strangely enough, the winners were the people who drank the most Hurricanes.

There were green, purple and gold beads everywhere. And not one, but two King cakes.

It was the Big Easy transported to D.C.

May your Mardi Gras (Fat Tuesday) be terrific!

Saving Time: Ready To Go Gift Solutions

Hope Gibson works as a Technical Demonstrator Support Agent at Stampin' Up! and recently wrote this article for the My Digital Studio blog.

With holiday merchandise beginning to fill our local department store shelves, I've started thinking about Christmas. It's almost that time of year (not that I'm counting). I keep thinking of how I can use My Digital Studio for my Christmas gifts. I love making things for my loved ones instead of buying something from a store. And, in my experience, handmade gifts are welcomed with open arms in my family.

I was looking through downloads and came across the Melt in Your Mouth Photobook Template (released July 24) and was instantly intrigued. The colors are vibrant, the patterns are fun and the best part—it already has recipes with mouthwatering pictures in it!

So, with the work already done (thanks, Stampin' Up!) I have more time to spend with my family and less time contemplating how to get started. I decided to print myself a copy. I wanted this recipe book to stand out from my others in my small collection and wanted something that could ship easily at a low cost. I decided a 5" x 5" soft cover photobook was a perfect fit for my needs. 

When I unboxed my book, I fell in love. The little book was so CUTE! With inspiration at my fingertips, I wanted to keep going, so I converted my project into a 5-1/2" x 6-1/2" easel calendar as well.

I'm so excited to start sharing these adorable cookbooks and newly adopted recipes with my loved ones. Are you going to use MDS 2 to make gifts for loved ones this year?

Now, about that cigar smoke.

Our family had huge gatherings for Thanksgiving dinner when I was a child. All the relatives came -- aunts, uncles, cousins twice removed. My mother was also keen to invite just about anyone she thought would not be at a Thanksgiving table with loved ones...whether they were new neighbors or someone she met in the grocery store line. Got the picture? Lots of people.

After our traditional Thanksgiving dinner and before dessert, the men would retire to the outside deck for a drink and a smoke while the women cleared the table. The pre-feminist me loved being included in the washing up chores with the adult women of my family...it was a rite of passage. They spoke of their lives as they washed and dried dishes, they consoled each other over losses, gave advice on everything from cooking to sex, and they laughed. They laughed a lot. The more they talked about their men the more they laughed. It was a secret club of very funny women showing sides of themselves I did not see at any other time.

It was my job as the eldest daughter to invite the men back in when dessert was ready. The women-only time of sharing the cleanup and sharing the moments of their lives came to a close when I was sent out to the cigar-filled deck. It's a bitter-sweet moment that I treasure and the smell of a cigar takes me to that moment every time.

Card In A Hurry: Happy Anniversary

What to do when you need a card in a hurry?

Plan A: Look through your "stash" -- surely there's a card I can use?!!!!

Hmmm...that's a no go for Plan A.

Plan B: Jump into My Digital Studio.

The focal piece for this card was created in My Digital Studio, printed out and mounted on a Basic Black base with a piece of Baja Breeze card stock at the bottom. Add a ribbon, pearls and sweet little bow and voilá -- a hybrid card done in under 10 minutes.

My favorite add-on is the pearl as the dot of the "i" in "cherish."

How could it be only 10 minutes? I CASED the focal piece from a post by Susan Erickson at www.mydigitalstudio.net -- a great site to browse when you're looking for inspiration. It took me only a couple of minutes to reconstruct the focal piece and then I was off and running.

The elements used in My Digital Studio are on the original DVD -- so no extra downloads here.

Father's Day: It's Not Too Late

It's Saturday and Father's Day is tomorrow...need a last-minute card you can whip up in a heartbeat?

If you own My Digital Studio, start with a template for a quick card. I started with the Well Scripted template. Here's what the template looked like before I modified the project:

I added stamp images from the Open Sea set, moved the elements around a bit, added some stitching, a brad and ribbon...and did it all in five minutes. Really!

Printing out my card was easy. Our Very Vanilla cardstock goes through my HP printer nicely.

My Digital Studio: Digital Crafting Made Easy

Ahhhhh...I do so love the Soft Blooms (#130080) embellishments for My Digital Studio.

Gosh, I love meeting with my team of demonstrators and would-be demonstrators!

We played with My Digital Studio, discussed how to organize Stampin' Clubs, reviewed Convention, and of course, got our hands busy with paper and ink.

My Digital Studio: Baby Onboard

Guess who's going to be a grandmother?

Yep, that's my granddaughter currently lodging in my youngest daughter, Katelyn.

The layout is a 8" x 8" scrapbook page created in Stampin' Up!'s My Digital Studio software. Oh, how I love this software!

What I don't love is the name "Grandma." So, what do I want the child to call me?

Well, of course I believe my granddaughter will come up with her own name for her cherished grandmother, such as "Wonderful-wise-woman-who-knows-all." My son-in-law, however, is not buying it.

So I need suggestions. Leave a comment with your favorite grandmother name -- I'll draw a few names and send you one of my full project tutorials.

My daughter and son-in-law have started a new life, and Stampin' Up! has come up wtih a way for you to have a new life, too...as a Stampin' Up! demonstrator.
